How I Work
As an integrative CBT therapist, I include methods methods of therapy evidenced to compliment and enhance the CBT process, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness and Hypnotherapy. The benefit of this integrative approach is that I can formulate treatment to meet the individual needs of each person I work with.
My main modality is a form of CBT known as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). REBT is a brief form of psychotherapy and is usually effective within 6 to 16 sessions. It works on the premise that the negative emotions that we experience such as anxiety, depression, anger, and hurt are not so much about what happens to us but the view that we hold about the events. This explains why two people can experience the exact same event but respond in very different ways. The process of REBT involves identifying the core beliefs that keep you stuck in a cycle of painful emotional responses and maladaptive behaviour and changing them to beliefs that are healthier and ultimately more helpful.
During our sessions we will work collaboratively to identify and understand your presenting problems and how these are impeding on your ability to fully engage and flourish in your life. We will then create a treatment plan to most effectively address these problems, connecting you with your values and the things that you want and love in your life, so that you can see how this new way of thinking and behaving brings you closer to to these things. You will learn skills that will serve you long past the therapy room.
